This manuscript is the transcript of the Old English texts in British Library MS Otho B.XI made by the sixteenth-century antiquarian Laurence Nowell. It provides important evidence of the content of the Otho manuscript before it fell victim to the Cottonian fire in 1731. Nowell revised and altered his transcript, commenting on vocabulary and adding passages that were back-translations from Latin sources. He carried out the work of transcribing Otho B.XI in 1562 while resident in the house of Sir William Cecil as tutor to the young earl of Oxford. The manuscript was one of eight transcripts by Nowell that were donated to the British Museum in 1934.
