This manuscript is known as the so-called 'Leofric Missal', although it is not a conventional missal but a late-ninth- or early-tenth-century sacramentary produced by a Lotharingian scribe. Subsequently, a large number of scribes added to the manuscript other material relating to the mass, a calendar of church feasts, and legal records. The first folio states that it was given to Exeter cathedral by its bishop Leofric (1050-72).
