Æthelstan’s tithe edict (I As)
This is now thought to be the first code of King Aethelstan (r. 924-939), although it seems to have been initiated by Archbishop Wulfhelm of Canterbury. The code is addressed to the reeves in each borough and was also accompanied by secular instructions, but it sets out the law as based on religious principle.
