This assize survives in the Chronica of Roger of Howden (fl. 1170-1201), of which there are two manuscripts: one charting events from 732-1180 and the other from 1181 to 1201. The assize of 1198 survives in the latter, now in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, which was produced during, or shortly after, Roger’s lifetime. The assize repeats the Assize of Woodstock in its entirety and is primarily concerned with the forest.
