MS Royal 13 D.II

This manuscript contains the Historia Britonum of Geoffrey of Monmouth and two works by William of Malmesbury: the Gesta Regum Anglorum and the Historia Novella. The Gesta Regum Anglorum includes within its narrative a legal text known as Cnut’s second letter to the English, which is reproduced here. The manuscript was produced in the twelfth century although it contains additions from later centuries. In the medieval period the manuscript belonged to Margam Abbey, which had been founded by Robert, earl of Gloucester (c.1100-1147), and to whom both Geoffrey of Monmouth and William of Malmesbury dedicated their works.
